What is Teeth Whitening (Bleaching)?

  • Due to advancing age or consumption of acidic foods, pores form in the enamel layer of the tooth over time.
  • The dyestuffs in foods and beverages such as cigarettes, tea and coffee accumulate in this porous structure formed in the enamel layer of the tooth.
  • These accumulated substances gradually cause yellowing and staining.
  • The whitening technique used to restore the natural appearance of teeth that have lost their white color over time is called Bleaching.

Who can have Teeth Whitening (Bleaching)?

  • People over the age of 16-18 who have completed their tooth development can have teeth whitening.

What are the teeth whitening methods?

Two methods are used for teeth whitening.

In the selection of these methods, first of all, examination should be done.

  1. Home Bleaching

  • Dental plaques suitable for the patient’s mouth size are prepared in the laboratory, accompanied by a dentist.
  • Plaques are placed on the teeth by applying gel.
  • Plaques are applied on the teeth between 30 minutes and 2 hours depending on the degree of whitening.
  • The bleaching process is repeated several times.
  • The number of times the application will be made depends on the condition of the tooth.
  • Regular application is required for maximum effect.
  • The whitening process is completed in approximately 1-2 weeks.
  1. Office Type Teeth Whitening (Office Bleaching)- Laser Teeth Whitening

  • Laser teeth whitening is done by a specialist dentist in the clinic.
  • First, the gel preferred as a whitening agent is applied on the tooth.
  • Then the laser is applied on the tooth for sufficient time.
  • The gel, which is activated by the effect of laser beams, isolates the substances accumulated in the enamel layer and whitens the teeth.

Does Bleaching damage the enamel layer of the tooth?

  • The visible layer of the teeth is the crown layer.
  • The crown plate consists of three layers, called enamel, dentin and pulp, from the outside to the inside.
  • The layer where the color problem is experienced in the teeth is the dentin layer under the enamel layer.
  • Since the whitening process only affects the dentin layer, the enamel layer or the pulp layer is not damaged.
  • At the same time, the gel used protects the enamel layer as it is rich in fluoride and potassium nitrate.
  • Is there tooth sensitivity after teeth whitening?
  • After teeth whitening, tooth sensitivity is experienced for a short time.
  • This sensitivity will go away on its own within a few days.

How long does the Bleaching effect last?

  • After the teeth whitening process, the teeth become much whiter than before.
  • However, people who frequently consume food and beverages such as tea, coffee and cigarettes may still have yellowing and stains on their teeth.
  • After the dental checks performed every 6 months, the teeth whitening process can be repeated according to the needs of the person
